A provider that connects to many banks and exposes them through a single interface, so that a software company integrates once instead of bank by bank.
The aggregator absorbs the differences between institutions: varying API standards, authentication flows, data formats and coverage. Without one, supporting twenty banks means twenty integrations to build and maintain.
The trade-off is a dependency and a cost per connection, against the engineering effort saved.
